Economical and practical
Water pumps have long been a significant part of the business of Commodore Independent Energy Systems. Matt Miller, the company’s marketing manager, told PV Magazine that the company sends out 10 to 15 pumps a week. Recently, this company has analyzed how much money customers (mainly farmers) can save by choosing a solar-powered pump over a diesel-gasoline or power-connected pump, which comes to the result that $33,550 can be saved each year at the largest end. However, few farms need such a large pump, so the saving won’t be so startling.
Simple and convenient
Solar pumps are a renewable source of energy and a cost-effective source of energy, Miller said, noting that people often underestimate them. That said, most farmers or other customers don’t expect solar pumps to be near their pumping capacity. Sure, solar pumps only operate during the day, but Miller says they still perform well in cloudy areas and on cloudy days. The ground-mounted solar panels that power the pump can also be mounted high up, Miller said, in a recent operation, the solar panels were placed about 300 meters from the pump and connected by a cable. Besides, batteries can also be attached to pumps so they can be used by command.
Energy-efficient and adaptable
While pumps are most commonly used by farmers to irrigate crops, the company has installed them in humanitarian projects in remote areas of Papua New Guinea to supply water to parched villages. The advantage of solar-powered pumps is that they require much less maintenance than diesel pumps and require no fuel, making them more suitable for developing and remote communities. In the past six months, solar pumps have also begun to integrate remote application access and monitoring, allowing customers to stop and start pumps to irrigate by their mobile phones.
